About Us

Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education (Visual Impairment) was established in 2006 to conduct Bachelor’s Degree programme in Special Education for the Visually Impaired under the Faculty of Education, University of Delhi and recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India. The college has been included in the list of colleges prepared under section 2 (f) and 12 (B) of the University Grant Commission (UGC) Act, 1956.

Our Key Features

The college is established and run by the Blind Relief Association, Delhi, a premier non-governmental organization, conducting training programmes to prepare special teachers for the children with visual impairment for more than five decades. Prior to the establishment of the college, the Blind Relief Association was running Diploma level course for teaching the visually handicapped since 1967 under the aegis of National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH), the then National Centre for the Blind.

Establishing the College to offer B. Ed. Special Education (V.I.) is a step forward in the field of Education for Visually impaired. Named after the famous freedom fighter, educationist and a doyen among social reformers Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh, the College can rightly boast of providing an excellent environment for the teachers in making. Housed within the same campus is the reputed J.P.M. Senior Secondary School for the Blind, a government-aided residential school affiliated to C.B.S.E. with over 200 visually challenged students on its roll. This School serves as practicing school for the teacher trainees. Apart from the School, BRA campus has a big Vocational Training Centre where a host of programmes in vocational training, including multi skill training, computer training etc. are being conducted for the rehabilitation of the persons with visual impairment.

It hardly needs emphasizing that College's excellent location and the facilities conveniently available to it, provide the ideal environment for pursuing course in special education with a special focus on visual impairment. The college has close association with various universities offering courses in Special Education. The college also extends academic as well as technical consultancy to various other NGOs and Government Departments on matters relating to blindness. Above all, the College has eminent and highly experienced regular and guest faculties.
